Residents Safely Escape Two Story House Fire

November 3, 2014   Residents Safely Escape Overnight Fire   FOND DU LAC, WI – On Monday November 3, 2014 at 1:40 a.m.  the Fond du Lac Fire Department responded to a report of a house on fire at 264 E. First Street. First in engine crew found heavy fire conditions in the rear of the structure.   The fire caused extensive damage to the rear of the 2-story wood frame structure.  All residents were able to exit without injury. Fire crews did hear a working smoke alarm in residence.  There was a power outage in the area due to the fire.  Alliant Energy responded and secured utilities and restored all power except for the fire building.   The Red Cross also responded to assist the displaced residents as the house is uninhabitable due to fire and smoke damage.  The Fond du Lac Police assisted with scene security, fire investigation and traffic control.   The cause of the fire remains under investigation but preliminary findings believe that improperly discarded smoking materials may be the cause of the fire.  Firefighters will be canvassing the area later today distributing fire safety information to nearby residents.
