Patches and Pumper

The City of Fond du Lac Fire Department is proud to introduce its newest member Patches the Fire Dog and his fire engine Pumper.

Patches & Pumper is an exciting tool for teaching children fire safety. It is a fully animated Dalmatian dog and fire truck robot that moves, speaks, listens, plays audio tapes, winks, and blinks, all by remote control. Patches & Pumper is used with great success in school classrooms, assemblies, station tours, mall exhibits, fairs, and any other setting where fire safety messages are presented.

Patches & Pumper is just the right size for teaching children because he can communicate with them at their level. He is agile enough to maneuver easily in school classrooms and other restricted areas. With Patches' friendly, furry face, he presents a positive image to all while he steers Pumper around the room. His headlights, taillights, and flashing warning lights make him highly visible.

Assistant Chief of Training and Safety for the Fond du Lac Fire Department says, “It is at times, difficult to communicate serious topics regarding fire prevention with the very young on their level; however, Patches and Pumper instantly bridges this communication gap. It is amazing to see.”  For a demonstration as to the effectiveness Patches and Pumper can have click here.

The Fond du Lac Fire Department was awarded a fire prevention grant through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in March 2010 to be able to purchase Patches and Pumper.  The Fire Prevention and Safety Grants (FP&S) are part of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) program, and are under the purview of the Grant Programs Directorate in the Federal Emergency Management Agency. FP&S Grants support projects that enhance the safety of the public and firefighters from fire and related hazards. The primary goal is to target high-risk populations and reduce injury and prevent death.
