Kitchen Fire in Fond du Lac Apartment Displaces Residents

FOND DU LAC, WI -- On Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at 6:54 p.m., the City of Fond du Lac Fire Department was dispatched to 214 Morningside Drive for a report of an apartment fire. Upon arrival, crews reported a fire in the first floor apartment of a four-unit, two-story apartment building. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading further than the kitchen, although the entire building sustained smoke damage. The occupant of the apartment where the fire started suffered minor injuries; she refused treatment.

The Red Cross was called to the scene to provide aid to nine displaced residents. Alliant Energy was also called to the scene to restore utilities which were shut off by firefighters.

One smoke alarm in the apartment appeared to have its battery removed and was not operational as required by code. Fond du Lac fire officials urge all residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms and check them monthly.

Fond du Lac firefighters were assisted by the Fond du Lac police.
