FOND DU LAC, WI - Two firefighters sustained minor injuries and a police officer was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation during a fire in a unoccupied two-story home at 180 8th Street early this morning. The fire was discovered by police while on routine patrol shortly before 3 a.m. and fire crews arrived to find the fire heavily involved in the basement.

Alliant Energy also responded to secure the gas and electric lines. One firefighter was taken to the hospital and released, while the other firefighter was treated on the scene. The police officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
"We are grateful for the assistance of the Red Cross as well as our other partners at the scene," said Fire Chief Peter O'Leary. "This morning's weather conditions were challenging and I am pleased the injuries sustained were relatively minor and the fire was contained to the one structure."
Fire and Police Investigators remained on the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire. The cause of the fire is undetermined and remains under investigation.
