Contractor Strikes Natural Gas Line, Causes Evacuation

Fond du Lac, WI:  On July 11, 2018 at 9:53 a.m. Fond du Lac Fire Rescue responded 300 Block of Star St. for a reported natural gas leak outside. Upon arrival fire crews met with contractors who were replacing a house service when they hit the existing line causing the leak.  Fire crews began a canvass of the immediate area  to assess gas concentrations in the atmosphere, nearby structures and within underground confined spaces.  Alliant Energy was dispatched and responded to the scene. FDLFR worked with crews to determine a safe evacuation area.  Several area residents were evacuated until the leak could be stopped. Alliant crews were diligently to mitigate the leak which ultimately rendered the area safe for residents to return to their homes. As a result of the leak, Alliant crews had to shut of gas service for approximately 30 customers.  The gas is expected to be restored later this afternoon.  Fond du Lac Police assisted with scene management and traffic control.  Residents are encouraged to visit Alliant Energy at the link provided for good tips for dealing with natural gas leaks:
