thaase@fdl.wi.gov May 2, 2013Media Release #1 Afternoon Apartment Fire Displaces 25 Residents Fond du Lac, WI:  On May 2, 2013 at 1:26 PM the
Fond du Lac Fire Department was dispatched to a reported apartment fire at 478
West Scott Street.  Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy smoke and
fire in a lower apartment of the structure.  The fire was extinguished,
but not before it caused severe damage to the contents and structure.  The
fire traveled up into the second floor causing smoke damage to eight
apartments.  The 25 residents in the North end of the building have been
displaced until proper cleaning can be a finished.   Five residents in the affected
apartment needed to self-rescue themselves out of a bedroom window.  They
were treated and released by the fire department paramedics.  “The
occupants acted quickly to exit the apartment via a first floor window due to
the intensity of the fire,” said Fire Chief Peter O’Leary. “This fire could
have been much worse if not for the quick response of fire crews.”Although the fire was unintentional, the cause of the fire
was due to an unattended pan of grease left on the stove. The Red Cross was on scene to assist residents of the
apartment with essential needs and shelter. The Fond du Lac Police Department
assisted with scene security and traffic control.  The City Building
Department was called to the scene and has posted the building
uninhabitable.  Alliant Energy also responded and secured utilities.
