Overnight Fire Destroys Home—Woman Jumps from Window to Escape Fire

FOND DU LAC, WI – On Monday June 11, 2012 at 1:45 a.m. the Fond du Lac Fire Department responded to a report of house on fire at 156 Amory Street. Upon arrival firefighters encountered a 2-story residential structure heavily involved in fire. One second floor resident jumped to safety from a second floor window when unable to exit the duplex via the stairs due to heavy smoke and fire conditions. FDL Police officers coached the victim to jump from the window. The officers were able to break the victim’s fall although she did need to be taken to the hospital for injuries she sustained from jumping. The
resident on the first floor was able to exit the building without incident.

The fire was extinguished but not before it destroyed the house, an adjacent automobile and caused minor damage to nearby houses. FDLFD was assisted by the FDLPD, FDL
Department of Public Works, Alliant Energy and the Red Cross. One police officer received a minor injury helping the victim down to safety. Some nearby residents had to evacuate their homes for a short time as a precaution.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and the cause
has not yet been determined. The Red Cross is helping those displaced by the fire.
