FDL Firefighters Fight Fire In Bitter Cold Temps

Fond du Lac fire fighters braved the cold temps near zero and wind chill well below zero to battle a residential fire at 211 East 2nd Street on Friday, February 1, 2013. Nobody was injured in a fire that has caused extensive damage to a Fond du Lac home. Firefighters were called to the scene on the northeast corner of 2nd Street and Park Avenue shortly before 2pm. Arriving crews made initial entry and were met by heavy smoke and fire on the third floor, open attic area of the home. Initial crews, along with a second attack crew, attempted to extinguish the fire from inside while exterior crews ventilated the roof to release heavy smoke and heat. The extent of the fire and the obvious structural damage to the roof forced crews to vacate the structure and the fire was extinguished from the exterior. The home sustained extensive structural damage and smoke and water damage throughout.

The following City departments provided assistance: Police - traffic control; Public Works – salting of icy streets; and Transit – city bus used as a warming area for firefighters. Alliant energy responded to secure utilities. The American Red Cross was on scene to provide assistance to fire crews as they battled cold temperatures and icy conditions and to offer assistance to the home occupants.
